Bank Street Arts

Bank Street Arts is a new Arts Centre in Sheffield City Centre at a formative stage of development. Housed in listed Georgian terraces only a stone’s throw from the market and the Cathedral, we aim to provide a home, venue and setting for a wide range of creative individuals and organisations. One of the key elements of our work will be the focus on collaborative cross media projects.

We are an unfunded, independent organisation which gives us the freedom to determine our own remit and operate in ways that organisations at the behest of outside targets are unable to do. One of the benefits of this freedom of operation is that we do not need to define what we do but can respond to demand and requests. We are currently restructuring the organisation having recently been awarded charitable status - we can now widen the scope of our activities and more easily raise funds on our own terms. Please get in touch if you are interested in becoming involved in this development.
After a considerable amount of upgrading the centre comprises office and studio space, galleries, project spaces, cafe and display areas, an education space and a shared jewellery workshop. Up and coming events include contemporary art installations, poetry readings, live art, exhibitions and discussions. Those using the centre include jewellers, visual artists, illustrators, designers, poets, publishers, photographers, architects, theatre companies and a host of other individuals from printmakers to book binders. The gallery spaces are available both to rent and as part of a curated programme of exhibitions and events. It is intended that the exhibitions in the galleries reflect the diversity of those in residence.
Our principle aims are:

- to provide good quality, affordable studio space for creative practitioners
- to provide opportunities for anyone interested in contemporary art, craft and writing to participate and get involved
- to act as a hub for creative practice in Sheffield
- to encourage and promote hybrid arts, in particular collaboration between diverse practitioners
- to reach a wider audience for contemporary art, craft and writing through collaboration with popular festival and events

Above all, we are open to anyone interested in getting involved and helping to shape the organisation at this early stage. Please contact us if you are interested in studio space, exhibiting, participating in fairs and markets, organising events, volunteering, applying for our residency programme, becoming a member or ... well, you decide. We are counting on the participation of many people to meet the above aims.
