Mad about MAD LAB

Situated in the heart of the Northern Quarter, on a back street, opposite Common bar, a small gallery, and community space has opened to provide all you wonderful creative people out there a place to get together and share work and ideas in the Manchester Digital Laboratory, or quite simply; MADLAB for short.

The former shop has been set up with the philosophy of ‘creating a new home for creative digital exploration and experimentation’. MAD LAB is a not-for profit venue and supports creative people who need a space to work or present work to peers. As the website puts it; "a community space for people who want to do and make interesting stuff - a place for geeks, artists, designers, illustrators, hackers, tinkerers, innovators and idle dreamers; an autonomous R&D laboratory and a release valve for Manchester's creative communities".

Quda popped along to a recent event to see what was on offer. The event was the ‘Made in India’ exhibition by Asian craft and visual arts; Shisha. A range of videoworks were on offer in the open space from, what Shisha claim to be; ‘the most exciting contemporary artists in Asia’.

The exhibition was the first establishing event for the Asia Triennial Manchester 2011 that will be presented across Manchester from October to November 2011, following on from the success of the ATM08. The work has submissions from artists living in Mumbay, Assam, Kolkata, Delhi and compiled by Ima Pico during a research residency in India in Febuary 2010.
