The 2011 ARMA will be run at The Art Room at Oxford School in association with First Story, London – a charity that places writers in challenging schools to develop literacy and creativity. The winning artist will be required to run 12 full day workshops at The Art Room, working with secondary school children and developing workshops alongside an acclaimed writer whose name will be announced in December. Ten of these sessions will be run during school time on either Thursday or Friday, with two additional sessions on a Saturday for families to take part in. The artist and writer will work together to stimulate the children in their creativity and literacy – using art as a tool to develop creative story writing, design and illustration. Artists are welcomed from any media.
The Residency will culminate in the publication of a book of work by all involved. The Artist will be required to create a public art installation for display at the school which will also feature on the front cover of the book. This will be followed by a book launch.
The public art commission can be in any medium and for either internal or external display.
The artist will be working with two groups of children during the day who will remain the same over the period of the residency.
The residency will run from May through to July 2011.
The artist will devise his/her own working process in relation to the needs of The Art Room/First Story and will receive support from two trained Art Room therapists and a First Story professional throughout the residency,
Please note that The Art Room is unable to provide studio accommodation and it will be the artist's responsibility to make arrangements for such a facility if required. Please note the Award includes all expenses such as travel, materials and artist's time.
The selection of the artist will be made on the following criteria:
Relevant previous experience.
Strength of the proposal put forward.
The proposed working process/media.
Examples of previous work and the suitability of the proposed work for public display.
The appointed artist will need to pass a Criminal Record Bureau check to ensure they are cleared to work with young children.
