MANCHESTER THEATRE AXED DUE TO FUNDING CUTS!

Apr 26th 2011, 11:02

Arts council funding cuts have wielded their axe, and after 25 years of contemporary theatre the curtain will finally fall on Manchester’s Greenroom at the end of this coming May. Due to government funding cuts the venue will no longer be part of the Arts Council England’s (ACE) national portfolio of regularly funded organisations.

Manchester will loose a long-standing platform for innovation and contemporary performance art. The Greenroom issued a statement saying ‘Since its inception, [it] has been at the forefront of discovering and pioneering Manchester, national and international ‘firsts’. We have been consistently committed to developing and presenting new and experimental performance, and more recently supporting and enabling artists at the start of their careers to be innovative, take risks and experiment with new ideas.’
The Theatre’s board have decided that without ACE’s vital funding it will be impossible to continue, ‘We would like to have continued but are unable to do this without confirmed funding or alternative income going forward.’

The government funding cuts have resulted in ACE having to cut 206 organisations from its portfolio of regularly funded bodies for 2012. Including Greenroom, seven other central Manchester based organizations will loose their funding, including All About Audiences and Castlefield Gallery. How the other organizations will cope with the cuts is uncertain.

However Greenroom is retrospectively looking over their achievements positively and have stated that the ‘Board and staff feel proud and privileged to have been part of Greenroom; and we’d like to thank everyone’.
